Start Your Morning Off Lucian-Style with a Warm Cocoa Tea!
Cocoa tea is the traditional breakfast treat in St. Lucia, made from the locally grown cocoa that is world-renowned for its high quality – the same stuff that’s used my chocolate-makers around the world. Now, the taste of a St. Lucian cocoa tea might need a bit of acquiring if you’ve never had it before, but once you give it a try, we’re sure you’ll love it. It’s not a “hot chocolate”, but it’s warm, soothing, and cocoa-ey!
It also has great health benefits. Studies have shown that food rich in cocoa can help reduce high blood pressure.
There are several cocoa plantations located on St. Lucia that offer historical tours of how cocoa is cultivated and processed. Two of the most popular plantations are Hotel Chocolat & Fond Doux Estate. On the plantation tours you can usually purchase cocoa in the form of a cocoa stick. This is just about 100% cocoa, and can later be grated to make the cocoa tea, chocolate, or other recipes. If you make it to our beautiful island, we definitely recommend you visit some of the cacao plantations and bring back a stick of cacao yourself so you can make a nice morning cocoa tea at home!
