Every holiday I always look forward to one of my favorite St. Lucian drinks that is traditionally made around Christmas time. It has that special “holiday drink” taste about it, is almost “spicy” in a way but is delicious and really puts you in the holiday spirit.
But after all, this is still a Caribbean drink despite being for Christmas and the holidays, which is why it’s also super refreshing on a hot day 🙂
This recipe is quick and easy to make, and perfect for any celebration.
The only tricky part is sometimes finding the sorrel itself (for us in North America anyway), depending on what sort of international foods your grocery store carries. So, if you can think of it at least a few days before it comes time to make the sorrel drink, just order the same sorrel package above from Amazon!
What You’ll Need:
- 8 cups of water
- 1/2 cup dried sorrel
- 2 cinnamon stick
- 8 whole cloves
- 2 3-inch pieces peeled fresh ginger
- 1 piece fresh orange peel (or dried)
- 1 cup of honey or agave to sweeten
Cinnamon, ginger, cloves, orange peel – you can already tell by the ingredients that this drink will taste like the holidays!
Directions:
In a large saucepan bring to boil the 8 cups of water. Then add the sorrel, cinnamon stick, whole cloves, ginger and orange peel. Let it boil for 2 minutes.
Reduce the heat to simmer for 30 minutes.
Strain and add your sweetener (if desired). Let it cool for a few hours-serve chilled.
Recommendations: served chilled with a fresh slice of lime. You can always add rum for grown up version 🙂
Cheers to the holidays and the New Year! 🙂
